São Luís is the capital of the state of Maranhão and was founded by the French in 1612. After that the Dutch dominated this territory and finally the Portuguese. In 1997, due to the colonial architecture of the “casarões” (big houses) and its handmade tiles, a rich popular culture which mixes the culture of the white Europeans, the blacks from Africa and the Indians (the original habitants), São Luís was awarded the status of a world cultural and historical heritage by UNESCO. This cultural harmony can be observed by the typical food, the regional music and the handcrafts. The short rainy season and the average temperature of 28° C throughout the year are perfect for the tourists who want to enjoy the beautiful beaches along the coast of São Luís (São Marcos, Calhau, Olho d’Água and Araçagy).
We will start with a panoramic tour of the beaches, Jansen Lagoon and then a stop at CEPRAMA to appreciate the typical handcrafts of Maranhão.
Afterwards you will be guided through the historic centre. On foot, you will visit Dom Pedro II square, pass by the Lyon’s palace (Palácio dos Leões), the old prefecture, the prison, the “Sé” Church, the Benedito Leite square, Portugal street, the House of Arts (Morada das Artes), the House of Maranhão, the cluster called “Convento das Mercedes”, the school music of Maranhão, the João do Vale theater, the actual prefecture and at the end of the tour the “Casa das Tulhas” market.
3 hours.
