Seasonal features

This itinerary covers three regions of Brazil with different climates, but predominantly tropical.

Rio de Janeiro
Tropical humid climate, with hot and rainy months from December to March, and a drier, more pleasant period from June to December. During these months, days are sunny, but temperatures can drop at night, especially between June and September. Temperatures generally range between 20°C and 30°C. The months from June to December are the most recommended to visit the city.

Iguaçu Falls
Humid subtropical climate, with rainfall spread throughout the year. The hottest and most humid months are from November to March, with temperatures that can exceed 30°C. From May to September, the climate is cooler and more pleasant, with less rainfall and temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. This is the best period to visit the falls with favorable weather conditions.

Northeast Brazil
Tropical climate, with a rainy season from January to June and a dry season from July to December. Temperatures remain steady year-round between 25°C and 35°C. The best time to visit Lençóis Maranhenses is from June to August, when the lagoons are full and the weather is more stable. Other coastal areas of the Northeast, such as the Parnaíba Delta and Jericoacoara, are also ideal during this period.

Day 2 - Rio de Janeiro

Van

Air conditioned, 15 passengers

We leave between 06:20 and 07:00, depending on which hotel we pick you up from, in an air-conditioned passenger van, for a group excursion of up to 19 participants, accompanied by a local English-speaking guide. The early start lets us reach the Corcovado train station for the first departures of the morning, avoiding the busiest times.
We take the train up to the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer, where a breathtaking view of Rio de Janeiro opens up: the mountains, beaches and bay blend into a unique panorama that reveals all the beauty of the “Marvelous City”.
After heading back down, we continue to the Sambadrome, where the Carnival parades take place, and the Maracanã stadium, with short photo stops outside. We then visit the Metropolitan Cathedral, known for its distinctive conical architecture and large stained-glass windows, and the Escadaria Selarón, where we stop for about 20 minutes to admire the famous staircase decorated with tiles from all over the world.
Next we reach Sugarloaf Mountain, riding the cable car in two stages: the first up to Morro da Urca, the second to the summit. The ride offers ever more spectacular views, ending in a 360-degree panorama from the top: Guanabara Bay and its islands, the beaches of Copacabana, the mountain skyline and Christ the Redeemer in the distance. One of the most memorable views in Rio, with the city stretched between the ocean and the mountains.
After coming back down, we stop at a restaurant for lunch (included), with a one-hour break included in the excursion’s total duration of about 8 hours. We return to the hotel at around 14:45.

Note: Times and the order of the visits may vary depending on traffic and access times to the attractions.

Day 3 - Rio de Janeiro

Van

Air conditioned, 15 passengers

We leave between 08:00 and 09:00, depending on which hotel we pick you up from, in an air-conditioned passenger van, for a group excursion of 12 to 19 participants, accompanied by a local English-speaking guide, to discover the historic part of Rio de Janeiro and the charming Santa Teresa district.
At the Santa Teresa tram station (bonde) we collect the return tickets and walk to Cinelândia, the square surrounded by important historic buildings, including the Municipal Theatre, the National Library and the National Museum of Fine Arts, whose façades we admire.
We then climb the famous Escadaria Selarón, the staircase covered in colorful tiles, to reach the streets and historic buildings of Santa Teresa, a district with a bohemian atmosphere, full of studios and small bars.
We visit the Parque das Ruínas (closed on Mondays), where the remains of an old residence blend with contemporary structures, with a splendid view over the city’s rooftops and Guanabara Bay.
At the end of the walk we take the historic bonde back toward the center, crossing the Arcos da Lapa aboard one of Rio’s most characteristic means of transport.
We finish at the Confeitaria Colombo (closed on Sundays), one of the city’s most famous historic cafés, where large mirrors, stained glass and refined furnishings preserve the charm of another era. We have about half an hour to admire the interior and take a break.
We return to the hotel at around 12:30.

Overnight stay in Rio de Janeiro with breakfast.

From the panoramic walkway you can admire them face to face, in all their majesty and power: an unforgettable experience, immersed in one of the most extraordinary natural settings in the world.

Note:
for those who love adventure, we recommend the inflatable boat excursion Macuco Safari (bookable directly on site), which goes up the Rio Iguaçu right to the foot of the falls, for an incredible setting. In addition to the cost of the excursion, you will also need to pay for the waiting time of the driver who accompanies you on this day.

We will cover 32 km of paved road to Iguazú National Park, with a stop at the border: you will need to have your passport with you.
On arrival at the visitor centre, we will take a small train, departing every 30 minutes, which will take us to the panoramic walkway crossing the heart of the park, a protected area renowned for its biodiversity. We will be able to admire brightly coloured butterflies, exotic birds and, with a little luck, also coatis and monkeys.
Along the walkway and the suspension bridges there are numerous viewpoints from which to admire the falls from different perspectives and the waters crashing down with great force.
The visit culminates at the Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat), one of the most thrilling and iconic spots: here the park’s most imposing waterfall plunges into the void, wrapped in a dense mist.

Day 7 - São Luís / Barreirinhas

Bus

Air conditioned, 30 passengers

Jardineira

No air conditioning, 10 passengers

We leave between 06:30 and 07:40, depending on which hotel we pick you up from, in an air-conditioned 30-seat tourist minibus. The drive is about 270 km on paved roads to Barreirinhas, one of the main gateways to Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Expected arrival is between 12:20 and 12:50.
Note: seats are assigned at random. For a more comfortable journey and a transfer more than an hour shorter, you can request a private vehicle for an additional fee.

In the afternoon, after checking in at the hotel, we set off at 14:00 on an unforgettable group excursion to the Lagoa Bonita circuit, about 1 hour off-road from Barreirinhas. We travel in a 4x4 jeep without air conditioning, open at the sides and fitted with a canopy. After leaving town, we follow a bumpy sand track to the dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, where we leave the jeep. From here we continue on foot through white sand dunes: we climb to the top of a dune more than 60 meters high for the best view, then go on to explore the area's lagoons. In this corner of paradise you can swim in cool, crystal-clear lagoons, filled by the rains between February and June and surrounded by white dunes as far as the eye can see. Some are up to 4 meters deep. Strong winds in the second half of the year move the dunes by up to 20 meters a year, so no two visits are ever the same.
We return to town after 19:00, after a stunning sunset among the dunes.

Warning: diving headfirst into the lagoons is not allowed. The bottom is uneven and often shallow: the risk of serious injury is real. Enter the water on foot.

Overnight in Barreirinhas, breakfast included.

Day 8 - Barreirinhas

Jardineira

No air conditioning, 10 passengers

After breakfast, departure at 08:15 in a non-air-conditioned 4x4 jeep for an exciting day of exploration. The route follows a sandy track of about 30 km, passing through increasingly impressive natural scenery. The drive takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, until we reach the area where the first dunes of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park begin to appear.
We then continue toward the beach of the picturesque village of Atins, where the waters of the Rio Preguiças meet the ocean, creating a unique and charming landscape. After a short stop, we proceed for another 20 minutes to reach the stunning dunes, where we’ll find natural lagoons of extraordinary beauty: fresh, crystal-clear waters in shades of green and blue — perfect for a refreshing swim in a magical setting.
Around 13:30, we’ll stop for lunch (not included) at a rustic and welcoming local restaurant, well known for the quality of its food. Among the specialties, don’t miss the famous grilled shrimp from Canto do Atins, a true local delicacy.
Return to the city is expected between 16:30 and 17:30, after a day filled with unforgettable landscapes and authentic flavors of Maranhão.

Overnight in Barreirinhas with breakfast.

Day 9 - Barreirinhas / Tutóia / Parnaíba

Pick-up 4x4

Air conditioned, 4 passengers

Speedboat

Without air conditioning, 12 passengers

We leave in the morning, at 09:30, in an air-conditioned 4x4 private vehicle for the town of Tutóia, on the border between the states of Maranhão and Piauí.
Once we leave Barreirinhas, the first stretch, about 1 hour to Paulino Neves, is the Panoramic Route of the Little Lençóis: we follow sandy tracks and cross a stretch of dunes of the Little Lençóis Maranhenses, through landscapes of incredible beauty: meadows slowly being swallowed by the dunes and native huts lost at the foot of the desert. In the rainy months the tracks can flood, and during that period the duration and route vary with the season. On reaching the small town of Paulino Neves, we continue for 34 km on paved road to Tutóia.
Around 12:00 we stop at Lagoinha, at a typical restaurant overlooking a natural lagoon (lunch not included), where we stay until 14:00: the place is simple, but the atmosphere is enchanting. We reach Tutóia at around 14:30.

On arriving at the port of Tutóia, we board a speedboat to discover the Parnaíba Delta, which separates the states of Maranhão and Piauí. Created by the Rio Parnaíba on its way down to the ocean, it is a marine-coastal environment of mangroves, dunes and a tangle of channels, inlets and islands of every size, with ever-changing scenery. The vegetation recalls a glimpse of the Amazon rainforest, along the Route of Emotions.
We sail more than 70 km through this beautiful delta, passing native fishermen in their motorized canoes. In some stretches the wind and waves can send spray into the boat: getting a little wet is part of the adventure.
Then comes the most beautiful moment of the excursion. At sunset, from July to January, hundreds of guarás (scarlet ibis) return to their nests in the forest: the fiery red of their plumage glows against the fading sky, in a spectacle that repeats every evening.

The return by boat always takes place as darkness falls, wrapped in the twilight.

Overnight stay in Parnaíba with breakfast.

Day 10 - Parnaíba / Jericoacoara

Pick-up 4x4

Air conditioned, 4 passengers

Departure at 8:00 in the morning in a Private air-conditioned 4X4 to the village of Jericoacoara, travelling the panoramic route through the dunes of Luis Correia and continue along 75 km of paved road until we reach Chaval where we climb go up the observatory to see look over the small city with its houses constructed in the middle of giant rocks.
We then travel 50 km of paved road until we arrive to the city of Camocim where we cross “Rio Coreaù” boarding a ferry and the trip continues long a 40-km stretch of coast, through trails, edging sand dunes, palm trees and coconut trees on the way to Tatajuba where we get to know the lagoon "Lagoa Grande” where we will stop for lunch (not included).

Our journey finally continues via Guriú and Mangue Seco, until we reach the village of Jericoacoara.
We’d like to mention that the actual duration of each visit is influenced by the schedule of the tides and is decided at the moment of the excursion.
The total duration of the trip is approximately 6 hours.

Note: the municipality of Jericoacoara requires a stay fee, already included in the cost of the tour.
The voucher that we will send you must be shown (in digital format) upon your arrival in Jericoacoara and also to the pousada where you will be staying (children up to 12 years and adults over 60 years are exempt from paying).
Important: There have been rumors circulating for a few days that a new environmental tax will be instituted in addition to the stay tax already included and paid in your itinerary but no timetable for when it will come into effect has been disclosed. The value is expected to be around R$ 50 (USD 9) per person and will be paid on the spot, although it has not yet been determined whether it will be collected at the hotel or otherwise. In case it comes into effect before your departure, I would like to point out that this cost was not included in our participation fee.

Overnight stay in Jericoacoara with breakfast.

Day 11 - Jericoacoara

Breakfast at the pousada and the rest of the day free to explore the charming village of Jericoacoara and enjoy its world-famous beaches, perfect for kitesurfing or simply relaxing by the sea.
